If you’re interested in serving, please send a note to contact@northbartonheights.org or use our online contact form. Once we receive a few volunteers, we will schedule an in-person or Zoom meeting to discuss!

In the late summer of 2020, a small group of community members met at the Brookland Park Community Garden with a strong desire to bring back the North Barton Heights Civic Association. We had grand ideas of reinstating a monthly member meeting, organizing community clean-ups and elderly care teams, launching a community farmers market, and overall representing the voice of our neighborhood. For safety reasons due to COVID-19, we never really had the opportunity to engage the community and grow the organization.

However, we did make great progress in forming the groundwork for a healthy civic association. We’re now a fully incorporated Virginia corporation with IRS 501(c)4 non-profit status. We have an association bank account and ability to receive dues and donations through check, cash, or PayPal. We have bylaws, registered boundaries with the City of Richmond, engagement with our city councilperson and local municipal service leaders, and neighboring associations.

And now the association is ready for its next round of leadership and growth. Are you interested?

Because our association has not hit the required quorum for a leadership election, we’re looking for volunteers that want to lead and as a group we can choose the next leadership. All roles will be open for immediate fill to include the following:

President

Our current President has moved away from Richmond so this is an urgent and immediate fill notification.

Outside of the duties prescribed in our current bylaws, the new President will need to take over or designate the following:

  • Association address change and directors update with the Virginia SCC
  • Annual 501(c)4 report to the IRS (this takes approximately 15 minutes, once a year)
  • The Annual Report and Registered Agent updates with the Virginia SCC (currently handled by a local lawyer, but costs $250/year which was donated by the current President). The new President and Board will need to decide to either keep the external registered agent or handle it themselves.
  • Assuming primary communications with the City of Richmond and local leaders
  • Working with the Treasurer, establish primary ownership of the Association bank account with ValleyStar Credit Union and our PayPal account
  • Working with the Secretary, assume responsibility for the association website, Facebook page, and email management

The current/out-going President will conduct a thorough one-on-one to help with the transition and guide through all of the Virginia and IRS platforms and processes.

Vice President

Outside of the duties prescribed in our current bylaws, the new Vice President will need to take over or designate the following:

  • Engaging the community to drive membership and participation
  • Planning and executing association meetings

Treasurer

Outside of the duties prescribed in our current bylaws, the new Treasurer will need to take over or designate the following:

  • Primary responsibility for our bank account with ValleyStar Credit Union and our PayPal account
  • Reviewing current funds (current balance is less than $200) and developing plans for 2022 budget and fundraising/membership growth

Secretary

Outside of the duties prescribed in our current bylaws, the new Secretary will need to take over or designate the following:

  • Engaging the community to drive membership and participation
  • Assume ownership of the Association website, Facebook, and member communications

As a group, this new leadership team can review and update the bylaws, drive the Mission and vision of the association, and help the North Barton Heights Community thrive.

The current team is still available to help with the transition! We thank you for your current support and while we’ve all loved serving this community, we look forward to a new team of community leaders leading this association to the next level!
